Dr Tina Xu is a China-trained physician, Australia-trained intensivist and UK-trained ECMO specialist. Having obtained MBBS, Master, PhD and MD, her first senior position was Attending Physician in Gastroenterology at Peking University Medical College Hospital, Beijing. Following her relocation to Australia in 2002 and joining the intensive care medicine training, she was awarded the Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand in 2015 and has been working as a consultant intensivist since.
Tina’s special interest in ECMO led her to work as an advanced trainee at ICU, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney in 2015 and relocate to the UK in 2017, working initially as an ECMO Fellow and then subsequently ECMO consultant at Royal Brompton Hospital London, a world-renown heart and lung centre and one of five NHS-commissioned ECMO centres for severe acute respiratory failure. Her 1-year fellowship and 3-year consultancy (including the first wave COVID-19 pandemic) in this ELSO Centre of Excellence - Platinum Level has equipped her with comprehensive experience in ECMO initiation/retrieval/management as well as managing complex heart and lung conditions with advanced mechanical ventilation, complex haemodynamic support, and various forms of ECLS.
She returned to Australia in 2021 as ECMO Lead at Canberra Hospital and have since established an ECMO program with robust training and governance. Her achievement was recognised with Canberra Health Services CEO Award – Excellence in Direct Service Delivery (Medical) in 2022.
Outside work, she is a freelance web-designer, an enthusiastic chef and vegetable gardener.
